My workmate, discussing one of our 'bad payers': "I just can't understand the mindset of being late with your bills. Leaving someone in the lurch like that, who's done all this work for you on good faith. I just couldn't do it. I'd be so embarrassed."

My dad/boss: "Well, that's easy to say until you're in that situation. I appreciate your sentiments, but you'd be surprised what people will do when they're in really desperate circumstances." [tactfully not saying "You'd be surprised what you would do."]

My workmate: [gets offended and flustered; tries not to show it because she respects my dad.]

PROFESSOR HIGGINS: [revolted] Do you mean to say, you callous rascal, that you would sell your daughter for £50?

DOOLITTLE: Not in a general way I wouldn't; but to oblige a gentleman like you I'd do a good deal, I do assure you.

COLONEL PICKERING: Have you no morals, man?

DOOLITTLE: [unabashed] Can't afford 'em, Governor. Neither could you if you was as poor as me.
